Salomé Dussán-Duque

I am a Biologist with a Master in science and a PhD in marine mammal ecology from the University of St Andrews.  For over 30 years I have been involved in the study, field research and conservation of aquatic mammals including riverine species of dolphins and manatees, and oceanic species of seals, dolphins and whales.
My main training as a field marine mammal researcher came from two of the best laboratories in the field: MOTE Marine Laboratory, Florida, USA, and the Sea Mammal Research Unit, University of St Andrews, Scotland.  Furthermore, I have work with aquatic mammals species and their ecosystems along side local communities and governments in South America, USA, Europe and Africa.  I conducted in Colombia, one of the longest projects to date on the ecology of two coastal dolphin species.
My main research interests are:  estimating population abundance and dynamics, spatial and mathematical Modelling of habitat use and distribution, predatory-prey interactions and hunting techniques, analysis of social networks, fisheries interactions, pollutants and global warming and their effect on prey distribution. My main goal as a researcher is the application of scientific results as an effective tool in marine conservation, through the identification of important habitats,  their aquatic mammals populations, and the threats they may encounter in the near and long future.
